Beyond the Game: Advancing Gender Inclusion Through Football

28 October 2026

Sport has the power to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create meaningful opportunities for every child, regardless of gender or ability.

As part of the AFC Dream Asia Foundation & ASA Foundation Goals for Good Programme, a school visit was conducted at SLBN 11 Jakarta, focusing on promoting gender inclusion and equal opportunities for students with disabilities through football.

During the visit, 10 students with disabilities, including 3 girls (30%) and 7 boys (70%), were observed in an inclusive football activity designed to support participation, interaction, and engagement across genders.

The observation provided an opportunity to better understand how inclusive sporting environments can support students with different abilities, while highlighting the importance of ensuring that girls and boys have equal access to meaningful participation.

Through the lens of gender inclusion, the session reinforced three important principles: equal opportunities to participate, respect for individual differences, and the importance of creating safe and supportive spaces where every child feels welcomed.

Inclusion is not simply about bringing children onto the same field. It is about ensuring that each child has the opportunity to participate, contribute, and feel a sense of belonging.

At Goals for Good, we believe football is more than a game. It is a platform for developing confidence, building connections, challenging social barriers, and fostering a culture of equality from an early age.

By continuing to engage schools, educators, and students with disabilities, we aim to contribute to a more inclusive sporting environment where gender and disability do not define a child's opportunities.

Because meaningful inclusion begins when every child is given the opportunity to play, be heard, and belong.
