Beyond the Game: Advancing Gender Inclusion Through Football

What happens when young people are given an equal opportunity to participate, lead, and grow through sport?

At the AFC Dream Asia Foundation & ASA Foundation Goals for Good School Visit at SMAN 34 Jakarta, we explored how football can serve as a meaningful platform to promote gender inclusion, challenge stereotypes, and foster equal opportunities among young people.

The school visit engaged and observed 34 students, including 19 girls (56%) and 15 boys (44%), through an inclusive football activity designed to encourage collaboration, mutual respect, and participation regardless of gender.

Through a shared learning experience on the field, students were encouraged to move beyond traditional gender expectations and recognize that football is not defined by who plays it, but by the opportunities it creates for everyone.

The session emphasized three key principles:

Equal Participation: Creating an environment where girls and boys have the same opportunities to engage and contribute.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes: Challenging assumptions about gender roles in sport and encouraging students to recognize everyone's potential.

Building Inclusive Communities: Strengthening teamwork, confidence, and mutual respect through shared experiences.

Beyond physical activity, this school visit highlighted the importance of using sport as an educational tool to encourage young people to question social barriers, embrace diversity, and develop more inclusive attitudes.

At Goals for Good, we believe meaningful social change begins with everyday opportunities for young people to experience equality in action. When girls and boys are empowered to participate on equal terms, they gain more than sporting skills. They develop the confidence, understanding, and sense of belonging needed to contribute to a more inclusive society.

Because gender should never determine who gets to play, who gets to lead, or who gets the opportunity to succeed.

Together, we are building a generation that sees inclusion not as an exception, but as the standard.
